Producing pure water through Reverse Osmosis
Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water is a grade of water that has been subject to a purification process called reverse osmosis (RO). During reverse osmosis, potable water is passed through a semipermeable membrane, leaving behind ions, molecules and larger particles and producing pure water.
Potable water often undergoes a softening process prior to going through the RO membrane. The softening process reduces the hardness of potable water, by replacing calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions. This will preserve the integrity of your RO membrane.
Reverse Osmosis does produce a relatively high reject rate and often, reject water is recirculated for further RO or can be used for alternative use rather than disappearing into the drain.
Two different flows are generated by the RO system: permeate water, corresponding to PW specification, and RO concentrate, which is recycled in the system in order to obtain a higher recovery with a lower consumption of inlet water. An additional devoted RO step might also be added to reduce the amount of concentrate water to be wasted.
Often a degassing module is installed after the RO system to remove unwanted gasses such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen and air. The requirements will depend on uses and the feedwater quality.
RO water is used for medical treatment applications such as dialyses and further water purification processes including, Ion Exchange Deionisation/Demineralisation (DI), Electro Deionisation (EDI/CEDI) and UV light treatment produce Purified Water, or Distillation or passing through secondary RO for producing WFI (Water For Injection)
